The Toilet Upgrade That Matters More Than You Think
If you live in a 55+ community in Manatee County — Heritage Harbour, Greenfield Plantation, Peridia, Del Webb Lakewood Ranch, or any of the other active adult communities we serve — there is one bathroom upgrade that our customers tell us made the biggest difference in their daily comfort: a comfort-height toilet. It is not glamorous, and it is not the kind of upgrade that makes it into home design magazines. But it is the one that matters most.
At Rosco Plumbing, we install comfort-height toilets throughout our 55+ communities every week. The feedback is consistently the same: "I wish I had done this years ago." Here is what comfort-height means, why it matters, and what to look for when choosing one.
What Is Comfort Height, and How Is It Different?
A standard toilet measures about 15 inches from the floor to the top of the seat. A comfort-height toilet (sometimes called "right height" or "chair height" by different manufacturers) measures 17 to 19 inches — roughly the same height as a standard dining chair. That two to four inches makes a significant difference in ease of sitting down and standing up.
For anyone with knee problems, hip replacements, back issues, or limited mobility, a standard-height toilet requires a deep squat that can be painful, difficult, or even dangerous. A comfort-height toilet reduces the range of motion needed, putting less stress on joints and making the bathroom safer and more accessible. It is the same principle behind the raised seats that physical therapists recommend after hip and knee surgery — but built into the toilet itself, so it looks and functions normally.
Comfort-height toilets are ADA-compliant, meaning they meet the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements for accessible facilities. This is worth noting if you are planning for aging in place, as it can affect future resale value and is increasingly expected in 55+ community homes.

Choosing the Right Comfort-Height Toilet for Bradenton's Water
Not all comfort-height toilets are created equal, and Bradenton's hard water makes the selection even more important. We recommend models with a fully glazed trapway — the internal passage that water and waste travel through on their way to the drain. A glazed trapway is smoother than an unglazed one, which means mineral deposits from our 15 to 20 GPG water have a harder time adhering to the surface. This translates to fewer clogs, easier cleaning, and better long-term performance.
Look for WaterSense-certified models that use 1.28 gallons per flush or less. The old 3.5-gallon-per-flush toilets that are still in many Manatee County homes waste an enormous amount of water. Modern 1.28 GPF toilets flush just as effectively (often more so, thanks to improved bowl and trapway design) while saving thousands of gallons per year.
Elongated bowls are more comfortable than round bowls for most adults, and they are the standard in comfort-height models. If space is tight in a smaller bathroom, round-front comfort-height models are available but less common. We can help you measure your bathroom and recommend the right configuration.

Rosco's Tip
Rosco's Tip
If you are replacing a toilet, replace the water supply line at the same time. The existing supply line has been connected for years and the compression fitting may not seal properly when reinstalled. A new braided stainless steel supply line costs about eight dollars and eliminates a common source of post-installation leaks.
Installation Considerations and Add-Ons
Replacing a standard-height toilet with a comfort-height model is a straightforward job that typically takes one to two hours. The drain flange and water supply are in the same position — you are simply swapping the fixture. A new wax ring (or wax-free seal) is always installed with a new toilet to ensure a watertight connection to the drain.
Many of our 55+ community customers pair the comfort-height toilet with a soft-close seat. These seats have built-in hinges that prevent slamming — a small touch that reduces noise and wear. Some customers also add a bidet seat or attachment, which provides a hygienic wash function and reduces the need for twisting and reaching. Bidet seats have become increasingly popular in our 55+ communities, and we install them frequently.
For homes considering future accessibility needs, we also recommend installing grab bars near the toilet during the replacement. It is much easier to install grab bars when the toilet area is already being worked on, and having them in place before they are urgently needed is a safety measure that makes sense.

Why This Upgrade Matters for Aging in Place
The concept of aging in place — remaining in your own home safely and comfortably as you age — is central to life in Manatee County's 55+ communities. Bathroom accessibility is one of the most important factors in whether aging in place is feasible. Falls in the bathroom are one of the leading causes of injury for adults over 65, and difficulty using a standard-height toilet is a contributing factor.
A comfort-height toilet is one of the simplest and most cost-effective aging-in-place modifications you can make. Combined with grab bars, a walk-in shower with a bench, and lever-handle faucets, it creates a bathroom that is safe, comfortable, and dignified for years to come. At Rosco Plumbing, we help homeowners throughout Heritage Harbour, Greenfield Plantation, Del Webb Lakewood Ranch, and Peridia plan and execute these modifications.
