Hurricane Season 2016: A Plumber's Prep Checklist

A plumber's hurricane prep checklist for 2016. Protect your home's water lines, sewer connections, and water heater before the first storm makes landfall.

Hurricane Season Is Here Again

June 1st marks the official start of hurricane season, and forecasters are predicting an active year for 2016. Here in Bradenton, we know the drill — stock up on water, charge the batteries, and board up the windows. But how much thought have you given to your plumbing? As plumbers who have served Manatee County since 1983, we can tell you that plumbing damage is one of the most common — and most expensive — consequences of a major storm.

Your Plumbing Prep Checklist

The single most important thing you can do is locate and test your main water shutoff valve right now, before any storm threatens. If you wait until a hurricane is bearing down on us, and that valve is seized, you are out of luck. Turn it off and back on to make sure it moves freely. If it does not, call a plumber to replace it — this is not a repair you want to delay.

  • Test your main water shutoff valve — replace it if it is stuck
  • Check your sewer cleanout cap for cracks or missing caps
  • Clear gutters and exterior drains of debris
  • Know how to turn off your water heater (gas valve or breaker)
  • Fill bathtubs with water before the storm for emergency flushing
  • Disconnect garden hoses from outdoor spigots
  • Take photos of plumbing fixtures for insurance documentation

After the Storm Passes

Once it is safe to inspect your property, do not rush to turn everything back on. Turn the water on slowly and walk through your home listening for running water when all fixtures are off. If you hear it, shut the main off immediately and call a plumber. Check around your water heater for signs of flooding — if floodwater reached the unit, do not restart it until a professional has inspected it.

Sandy soil here in Manatee County can shift during heavy rains, and underground pipes can separate at the joints. If your water bill spikes after a storm or you notice wet spots in the yard, you may have an underground leak that needs attention.
