Kitchen Sink Plumbing 101: Common Problems and Easy Fixes

Kitchen sink problems are among the most common plumbing issues. Learn to diagnose and fix leaky faucets, slow drains, and disposal jams like a pro.

Your Kitchen Sink Works Harder Than You Think

The kitchen sink is the most heavily used plumbing fixture in most homes. Between cooking, cleaning, and daily dish duty, it handles a lot of water, food debris, and grease. It is also where most homeowners first notice plumbing problems — a slow drain, a dripping faucet, or a funky smell coming up from the pipes. Here are the most common kitchen sink issues and what you can do about them.

Slow Drains

A slow kitchen drain is usually caused by a buildup of grease, soap residue, and food particles in the drain line. Before you reach for a chemical drain cleaner — which we strongly advise against, as they can damage pipes — try a few home remedies. Pour a pot of boiling water down the drain. If that does not work, try half a cup of baking soda followed by half a cup of vinegar. Let it fizz for 15 minutes, then flush with hot water.

If the drain is still slow, check the P-trap — the curved pipe section under the sink. Place a bucket underneath, unscrew the slip nuts, and clean out whatever is inside. You might be surprised at what you find. Reassemble, hand-tighten the connections, and test.

Dripping Faucets

A dripping kitchen faucet is not just annoying — at one drip per second, it wastes over 3,000 gallons of water per year. The fix depends on the type of faucet. Single-handle faucets usually need a new cartridge or ceramic disc. Two-handle faucets often just need new rubber washers or O-rings. Replacement parts are inexpensive, but getting to them requires disassembling the faucet handle, which varies by manufacturer.

If you are not comfortable taking apart your faucet, that is perfectly okay. Faucet repair is one of our most common service calls at Rosco Plumbing, and it is a quick, affordable fix.

Bad Smells from the Kitchen Drain

A smelly kitchen drain is usually caused by food debris decomposing in the drain line or garbage disposal. For the disposal, toss in a handful of ice cubes and a few lemon wedges, then run the disposal with cold water. This cleans the impellers and freshens the unit. For the drain itself, the baking soda and vinegar treatment works well as a deodorizer too.

If the smell persists and has a sewer gas quality — like rotten eggs — the P-trap may have dried out or there could be a venting issue. This is a situation where calling a plumber makes sense. Give us a ring at (941) 345-2464 and we will track it down.
